Response to Dennis Kucinich Decision to Drop out of Presidential Race
Mr. Kucinich’s decision to drop out of the presidential race is a good one, but does not go far enough: he needs to drop out of the congressional race as well. Let’s face facts: Mr. Kucinich’s quixotic, coast-to-coast campaign to stamp out poverty, make peace across the planet, end global warming and extend a friendly hand to visitors from outer space, while not completely without merit, must by now leave us all wondering if Mr. Kucinich himself is in fact a UFO.
We live in critical times when answers to the multitude of problems need to be thought through, deliberated with the leaders in both parties and solutions legislated. What we have seen time and again from Mr. Kucinich is a carnival campaign of words with no chance of being taken seriously. But his conduct as a presidential campaign is far from his most serious transgression. For 11 years, he has failed to develop serious alliances with fellow representatives to pass important legislation to help our own district. He ranks at the bottom in Congress for losing one third of the district’s federal dollars. He didn’t save steel. He didn’t save the hospital and he certainly did not save DFAS. He has missed so much work that the National Taxpayers Union says he owes the federal government more than $25,000 for his absences.
I grew up in Cleveland in a family whose survival depended on the success of our family business. We each had to do our part and I can tell you my mother made sure all of us knew the difference between talking about getting something done and working together, as a family, to make our business succeed. Our district is struggling through very difficult economic times. Now is the time to no longer allow ourselves to be persuaded by ‘dreams of glory’ from a candidate who repeatedly fails to deliver legislation, jobs or federal dollars, while more and more of our good citizens lose their jobs and homes, our schools struggle to have sufficient resources to teach our children, our infrastructure goes underutilized and our potential lay fallow.
I am running for Congress because I know district I grew up in, not because I intend to solve a world of problems. I have a demonstrated track record of success working in Congress and with Congress and in communities here and around the world. Having spent a quarter of a century as a senior manager working in over 100 countries, I know how to solve problems large and small. My platform for this campaign is focused on three major issues: Economic growth and development; Protecting the benefits of our Veterans and Seniors; and Strengthening Education to ensure that the next generation of leaders is prepared to lead across all sectors of the economy.
Mr. Kucinich want to spend federal dollars on a "Department of Peace." I served in the Peace Corps--which is still doing just fine--where we learned fast that practical skill, hard work and hard won friendships are the lifeblood of lasting and sustainable peace, not building monuments to empty talk.
Today, Mr. Kucinich will tell us once again that he has dropped out of the presidential race and that he has found his way home. I ask everyone in District 10 to take a deep breath and say together: “Mr. Kucinich, you haven’t dropped out far enough!” Barbara Anne Ferris
